Tips for Coping with Divorce

In light of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Divorce Support Circle focused on how clients are coping with the divorce. Clients participated in the “Walk In Our Shoes” exercise. This was taken from the mental health campaign initiative that shares real stories of people going through challenges. Sharing real life stories helps clients to normalize what can otherwise be a dreadful and scary experience.

Clients admitted that it was indeed a stressful process. They also reported that they felt a loss of identity, increased weight gain, sleep disturbance, anxiety, emotional eating, and sadness. Some clients who were further along in the divorce process shared that they used medication, especially at the start of the divorce process, and that this was helpful for them. Eventually, as the process continued and the divorce was close to being finalized, they stopped using medication.

The Use of Medication and Coping with Divorce

Medication does not have to be a permanent accessory in your daily routine, but it can help in the short term. Clients also watched a video clip of a movie with a successful business man who was grieving and how it took a toll on him. Clients then shared motivational apps and sleep apps that they found helpful.

Self-Care Strategies During a Divorce

Clients shared self care strategies, and some talked about looking forward to taking a vacation after the divorce.  More information on the “Walk in Our Shoes” initiative can be found here: https://walkinourshoes.orgThe Divorce Support Circle is facilitated by the firm’s divorce coach/psychologist, Dr. Leah Nathan, on the second Tuesday of every month.
