February 2020

We raised $62,365.44, which will go directly to the Artemis House operated by Shelter House. For the second year in a row, we have exceeded our previous high by a great margin. Since we started the golf tournament, we have raised over HALF A MILLION DOLLARS for the victims of domestic violence at Artemis House!

Many of the attorneys at Cooper Ginsberg Gray have been recognized for their work in family law over the last several months in publications including The Washingtonian, Virginia Business Magazine, Arlington Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine.

The Washingtonian’s Best Lawyers

The district’s premier publication surveys more than 1000 attorneys that have been previously recognized. It then combines this data with discussions with other legal professionals, as well as independent research and news gathering. The magazine prides itself on revamping its list each time it’s created.

Cooper Ginsberg Gray was honored to have David Ginsberg, Nathan Olson, given the distinction of 2019 Legal Elite. Honorees are selected based on several criteria including polling over 14,000 lawyers.

Arlington Magazine Top Lawyers

Published six times a year, Arlington Magazine focuses on the vibrant communities of Arlington, McLean, and Falls Church.

Its website maintains a finger on the pulse of trends and issues important to the residents of these communities, including the top divorce lawyers in VA.

Arlington Magazine gives the distinction of Top Lawyers to attorneys nominated by their peers. Among the recipients recognized in the Fall of 2019 were six of our own lawyers: Heather Cooper, David Ginsberg, Daniel Gray, Nathan Olson, Stephanie Smith and Kristen Kugel.

Robert Worster III Selected as a 2018 Top Ranked Lawyer by American Lawyer Media and Martindale-Hubbell

On February 6, 2018, it was announced that Rob Worster was selected as a 2018 Top Ranked Lawyer by American Lawyer Media and Martindale Hubbel. Rob had previosly been awarded Matindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent Attorney Award; Client Distinctiond Award and Gold Client Champion Award.

Robert Worster Awarded a Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award at the Annual State of the Judiciary Luncheon

Congratulations to our very own, Robert Worster, for being awarded one of the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year awards at the Annual State of the Judiciary Luncheon on November 29, 2017! Over the years, Rob has dedicated much of his time to community service and pro bono work. He refurnishes furniture for use by Pathway Homes and has fostered 35 to 50 greyhounds with his wife. His positions within the community have included the following:

Dan Gray Selected as a Lawyer of the Year

CGG is proud to announce that Dan Gray has been selected by Best Lawyers as a 2018 “Lawyer of the Year” in the practice of family law in Northern Virginia!  This annual honor is only bestowed on a single lawyer in each practice area within a designated metropolitan area.  Dan earned this outstanding recognition, which is entirely based on peer review, because of his talent, accomplishments and integrity in the area of family law.  He is one of only two family law attorneys in Virginia who received this accolade, the other being our friend and colleague, Terrence Batzli from Richmond, Virginia.  We could not be more proud of Dan (and Terry!)

Also recognized in the 24th edition of Best Lawyers in America for their work in family law are partners, Heather Cooper and David Ginsberg.  Congratulations to all!

David Ginsberg Starts Another Year at George Mason Law

David Ginsberg began his sixth year of teaching Law Practice Management as an Adjunct Professor at the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School on Monday, August 21st.  David co-teaches the class with fellow George Mason Law graduate, Robert Feisee.

Rob Worster Elected Secretary of the VA State Bar’s Fifth District Committee

Rob Worster has been elected Secretary of the Virginia State Bar’s Fifth District Committee (Section II).  This Section is one of two committees assigned to Fairfax County and is comprised of seven local attorneys and three lay members.  Members of the Committee meet monthly throughout the year to review investigative reports and evaluate pending complaints about Virginia lawyers with an assigned bar counsel. Congratulations, Rob!

Rob Worster Attended the Annual Virginia State Disciplinary Conference at the Scenic Wintergreen Resort in Roseland, Virginia

Earlier this month, Rob Worster attended the 37th Annual Virginia State Disciplinary Conference at the scenic Wintergreen Resort in Roseland, Virginia. Rob is excited to begin his first term with the Fifth District Disciplinary Committee. This Committee evaluates pending bar complaints and makes recommendations concerning lawyer discipline.

Heather Cooper Named Among “Virginia’s Best Women Lawyers”

Congratulations to Heather Cooper who has been included among “Virginia’s Best Women Lawyers” published in the August 2017 edition of Virginia Living Magazine. The list of the state’s top-rated women lawyers was excerpted from the 2017 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, for which lawyers are selected by the vote of their peers.

CGG Wins Corporate Impact Award for Excellence in Philanthropy 

On Wednesday, June 28, 2017, CGG was surprised with the Corporate Impact Award for Excellence in Philanthropy at Shelter House’s 2017 Volunteer Appreciation Reception held at Maggiano’s in Tysons Corner.  Shelter House is a community-based, non-proft organization serving homeless families in Fairfax County.  CGG organizes a charity golf tournament each year, the proceeds of which  benefit Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24-hour shelter for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking which is operated by Shelter House.  To date, the tournament has raised over $350,000.  David Ginsberg, who is a member of the Board of Directors of Shelter House, was pleased to accept the award on behalf of CGG.

Nathan Olson Recognized for 10 Years of Service with Virginia State Bar’s Young Lawyer Conference

Earlier this month, Nathan Olson attended the 79th Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach.  On June 16, 2017 Nathan was honored at the Young Lawyers Conference luncheon for his 10 years of service.  Nathan was presented plaque and the outgoing President (Dean E. Lhospital) thanked him for his dedication to the YLC and to bar service in general. During his decade of service, Nathan served as a Program Chair, Circuit Representative, Board of Governors Member, Bar Council Member, and President of the YLC.  We are proud of Nathan’s involvement, dedication and hard work. Congratulations, Nathan!

Rob Worster Joins Virginia State Bar Council 

On June 15, 2017, the Virginia State Bar Council unanimously approved the nomination of our own Rob Worster as a committee member of the 2017-2018 Fifth District Committee (Section II).  District committees are the backbone of the attorney disciplinary process and we are proud that Rob has joined Heather Cooper and Stephanie Smith in this important role of service to the bar and public.

David Ginsberg Appointed to Board of Directors for Shelter House, Inc.

CGG is proud to announce that David Ginsberg has been appointed to the Board of Directors for Shelter House, Inc., a community-based, non-profit organization serving homeless families in Northern Virginia.   Since 2010, Shelter House has operated Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24-hour Domestic Violence Shelter.  David has been instrumental in organizing an annual charity golf tournament that has raised $350,000 for Artemis House since the tournament started 16 years ago.  Congratulations David!

Joanne Randa Certified as a Virginia Registered Paralegal by VAPA

Joanne Randa has been certified by the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Associations (VAPA) as a Virginia Registered Paralegal.  To earn this credential, Joanne had to meet several criteria in terms of her education, experience and CLE attendance. Formed in 1989 by a small group of paralegals, VAPA is best known for its biennial multi-day CLE conferences and the establishment/procurement of Paralegal Week every October.

16th Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Charity Golf Tournament Raises over $35,000!

The 16th Chipping in to End Dometic Violence Charity Golf Tournament, held Friday, October 7, 2016 at Landsdowne Resort, raised over $35,000 for Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24 hour domestic violence shelter.  Since its inception, the tournament has raised over $350,000.

Nathan Olson Appointed to 2016-2017 Judicial Screening Committee

Nathan Olson was appointed as an alternate member of the Fairfax Bar Association’s 2016-2017 Judicial Screening Committee.  The Screening Committee will meet, as needed to interview candidates for judicial vacancies in the Fairfax County court system.

Dan Gray and Pathway Homes are Runners Up for 2016 Board Leadership Award

After advancing through two rounds of interviews, Dan Gray and Pathway Homes, for which Dan serves as Chairman of the Board, were runners-up for the 2016 Board Leadership Award presented by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement.  Pathway Homes is a Virginia non-profit organization that provides non-time-limited housing and support for Virginia residents with significant mental illness.  Dan has served on the Board for Pathway Homes since 2009.

Dan Gray Appointed Chair of Family Law Section of VSB

Dan Gray was appointed as Chair of the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar during the VSB Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach.  Dan has served on the Board for several years and will be acting as the Chair for the 2016-2017 bar year.  The Board examines issues related to the practice of family law in Virginia, and publishes the widely-read Virginia Family Law Quarterly, to which Dan has contributed articles in the past.

Anne Robinson Appointed as Treasurer of the Board of the Junior Friends of The Campagna Center

Anne Robinson was appointed as Treasurer of the Board of the Junior Friends of The Campagna Center.  Junior Friends provides important fundraising and volunteer support to the Campagna Center, Alexandria’s leading non-profit organization supporting children and families since 1945.

Kristen Kugel Coaches GMU School of Law to Semi-Final

Over the weekend of March 10-13, 2016, Kristen Kugel coached a George Mason University School of Law trial advocacy team in the 2016 Student Trial Advocacy Competition hosted by the American Association of Justice.  The competition was held in Washington D.C. at the Moultrie Courthouse.  Out of 16 competing teams, GMUSL finished in the top 4 and made it to the semi-final round.

Rob Worster Selected as Elections Officer

Rob Worster has been selected as an Elections Officer through the Virginia Department of Elections.  Rob will help ensure an efficient and well-run election in Fairfax County, which is the largest jurisdiction in Virginia consisting of 243 precincts countywide.

Robert Worster joins the Faculty of the VSB Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course and David Ginsberg joins Faculty of VSB Harry L. Carrico Law School Professionalism Course

Robert Worster joined the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course.  David Ginsberg completed his tenure with the Course, and joined the faculty for the Virginia State Bar Harry L. Carrico Law School Professionalism Course.  In December of 1988, the Virginia State Bar implemented a rule requiring all newly-licensed Virginia lawyers to complete a course in the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct and professionalism in general.  The faculty of this course consists of judges and attorneys who are committed to instilling the fundamental values of professionalism in new lawyers.

Charity Golf Tournament is a Huge Success!

The 15th Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Charity Golf Tournament was held at Landsdowne Resort on October 9, 2015 and was an amazing success!  The tournament had a full field of golfers, a number of new sponsors, and over 100 prizes donated from various community businesses.  Since the golf tournament started over 15 years ago, it has raised over $300,000 for the abused women and children at Shelter House (Fairfax County’s only 24 hour domestic violence shelter).

Dan Gray and Nathan Olson Assume Positions of Leadership in the VSB

On June 12, 2015, at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach, Dan Gray was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Virginia State Bar’s Family Law Section Board, and was elected Treasurer of the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  Several days later, on June 19th and at the same conference, several members of the firm gathered to celebrate as Nathan Olson was appointed President of the Young Lawyers Conference.

Dan Gray Nominated as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Pathway Homes

Dan Gray has been nominated as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Pathway Homes, a charitable organization providing non-time-limited housing and supportive services to adults with serious mental illness and other co-occurring disabilities in Northern Virginia.  Dan has served on the Board since 2009.

Heather Cooper Appointed to Board of Directors for Fairfax Law Foundation

Heather Cooper has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Fairfax Law Foundation.  The Foundation exists to increase access to justice, improve the administration of justice, and provide law-related community education initiatives.  It sponsors several events throughout the year, including the Golden Gavel Awards, Jazz4Justice, Law Day Weiner Roast and the Heroes v. Villains 5k race.

CGG Nominated for Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award

Cooper Ginsberg Gray was nominated in the Corporate Volunteer Program category of the 23rd Annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards, primarily on the basis of the very successful Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Charity Golf Tournament. Established in 1993, these awards serve as a community-wide celebration of volunteerism, and honor individuals, groups and organization that have given volunteer service through a broad range of activities and programs.

Kristen Kugel Coaches Trial Ad Team to Victory!

On March 19-22, 2015, a trial advocacy team from George Mason University School of Law, accompanied by Kristen Kugel as coach, competed in the 2015 Student Trial Advocacy Competition sponsored by the American Association for Justice.  The GMUSL team edged past 15 other teams from law schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and DC to be named the regional winner of the competition.

David Ginsberg Presented with Prestigious Humanitarian of the Year Award

David Ginsberg was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year Award by the Fairfax Law Foundation at the Fairfax Country Club during the Foundation’s 2014 Golden Gavel Awards dinner on October 1, 2014.  David was recognized for his tireless work within the community, including the organization of the annual Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Golf Tournament which has raised nearly $250,000 for the abused women and children at the Artemis House (formerly known as the Fairfax County Women’s Shelter).

Heather Cooper Joins Faculty of the VSB Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course

Heather Cooper has joined the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course.  In December 1988, the Virginia State Bar implemented a rule requiring all newly-licensed Virginia lawyers to complete a course in the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct and professionalism in general. The faculty for this course consists of judges and attorneys who are committed to instilling the fundamental values of professionalism in new lawyers. Heather is looking forward to beginning her three-year tenure in October 2014, at which time she will be serving with David Ginsberg (who is in his second year on the faculty). Heather and David follow in the footsteps of Dan Gray, who recently completed his three year tenure on the faculty.

Stephanie Smith Appointed to Fifth District Disciplinary Committee of the VSB

Stephanie Smith was appointed to serve on the Fifth District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar.  The Fifth District Committee is one of two committees assigned to Fairfax County and is comprised of seven local attorneys and three lay members. Nathan Olson Appointed to Serve on VSB Standing Committee on Professionalism

Nathan Olson was appointed to serve on the Virginia State Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism. This 16 member Committee is one of five Standing Committees of the Virginia State Bar, and is responsible for administration and ongoing oversight of the Mandatory Course of Professionalism (which is required of all newly admitted active members of the Virginia State Bar).  Nathan will serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2014.

Dan Gray Appointed as VSB Representative for the Virginia Family Law Coalition

Dan Gray was appointed as a Virginia State Bar representative for the Virginia Family Law Coalition, which grew out of a successful collaboration by the VBA and VTLA during the 2008 Session of the General Assembly.  The Coalition consists of a cadre of experienced family law practitioners from around the state with a demonstrated interest in family law legislation and other family law issues.

Nathan Olson Elected to VSB-YLC Executive Board

Nathan Olson was elected to the Executive Board of the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar.  During the next four years, Nathan will serve as Secretary, Incoming President, President, and Immediate Past President. Nathan has been an active member of the YLC since 2006.

Nathan Olson Completes Second Stint as Adjunct Professor at GMUSL

Nathan Olson completed his second stint as an adjunct professor at the George Mason University School of Law.  Nathan taught a course in family law for third year students.  The course was aimed at preparing law students for the practice of family law, by assigning each student a fictional client.  The students represented these clients throughout a separation and divorce as well as a post-divorce matter.  This was the first time such a course was offered at GMUSL.

The December 2012 issue of Washingtonian Magazine features the cover story “Marriage* Making Love Last–And Who To Call When It Doesn’t.” The article features a one-page listing of its “Best Lawyers” to call when calling it quits. This list is an updated version of the magazine’s 2011 Best Lawyers Guide.  Heather Cooper, David Ginsberg and Dan Gray made this distinguished list consisting of only 78 family law attorneys in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area.

Over $22,000 Raised by Charity Golf Tournament

The Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Charity Golf Tournament was a huge success, raising $22,643.30 for the Artemis House (formerly known as the Fairfax County Women’s Shelter).  Artemis House offers a safe, confidential location and supportive counseling to victims of domestic abuse in addition to offering psycho-educational programs on domestic violence, helping connect individuals to services needed, and providing a time to gather themselves emotionally and resume functioning in society.

David Ginsberg and CGG Honored with Community Champion Award

David Ginsberg and Cooper Ginsberg Gray were honored with the Community Champion Award at the Shelter House, Inc. 2012 Annual Meeting and Volunteer Awards held at Capital One’s offices in McLean.  Community Champion Awards are given to groups who have a steadfast commitment to Shelter House, as evidenced by their continued contributions and support.  Shelter House operates the Artemis House, Fairfax County’s emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence.  Cooper Ginsberg Gray has raised more than $166,000 for Artemis House over the years through its Chipping in to End Domestic Violence Charity Golf Tournament.

Dan Gray Accepted into American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

Dan Gray was accepted into the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, which was founded in 1962 to provide leadership that promotes the highest degree of professionalism and excellence in the practice of family law.  Academy Fellows, which now includes Dan, are highly skilled negotiators and litigators who represent individuals in all facets of family law.

Heather Cooper Appointed by Governor to Child Support Guideline Review Panel 

Heather Cooper was appointed by Governor McDonnell to the Child Support Guideline Review Panel.  The panel leads the review of Virginia’s child support guidelines, which must be done every four years, by law, to ensure that their application results in the determination of appropriate child support awards.

Dan Gray Joins Faculty of VSB Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course

Daniel L. Gray joined the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course.  In December 1988, the Virginia State Bar implemented a rule requiring all newly-licensed Virginia lawyers to complete a course in the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct and professionalism in general. The faculty for this course consists of judges and attorneys who are committed to instilling the fundamental values of professionalism in new lawyers
