Meet the Team – Melisa Thurmond

Today, we are excited to highlight Melissa Thurmond! Melissa has been with CGG since February of 2024, and is close to finishing up her first year of law school!

1. When did you know that you wanted to go to law school, and what would you describe as the impetus for your decision?
I have always wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was a kid, but wanting to be a lawyer and wanting to go to law school are definitely two different things. I knew that I wanted to go to law school when I observed my first settlement conference and deposition with Nathan Olson. Being able to observe attorney-client relations and the nitty-gritty details of how cases actually work – it was like a light switch turned on. From then on, there was no other path but the path to being a family law attorney.

2. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far about practicing law – something that they don’t teach in law school?
It is just as important to be respectful, responsible, and reputable as it is to know and practice the law well. To be a good lawyer is to hold both at the same time.

3. What do you do to decompress when you’re juggling work and law, and school classes?
Read fantasy books instead of law books and go swimming or play tennis.

4. What is your favorite Mom & Pop shop in the Northern Virginia area and what do you love about it?
My favorite spot in NOVA has to be Trattoria Villagio. It is this little Italian place in Clifton that has the best atmosphere and even better food. Their crème brulée is the best I have ever had.
